Wearing your running shoes at all times: good or bad?

Do you put on your running shoes to go shopping, pass the mower or for your Tuesday night badminton games? This article is for you!

First and foremost, you need to determine your needs. As a general rule, if you play a sport more than 3 times a week, wearing a shoe suitable for that activity would be appropriate. In fact, not only will you optimize your workouts, but above all, you will reduce your risk of injury.

Signs of an improper shoe include the appearance of blisters, instability when performing movements, premature wear and tear on the shoe and a host of injuries ranging from a sprained ankle to discomfort in the knees and hips.

Running shoes

Running shoes are therefore not the best choice in your regular sports activities. Indeed, as they are manufactured to go in a straight line, they do not offer the necessary stability for Zumba classes for example. In addition, the majority of running sneakers offer some heel-raising cushion. Over time, this cushion compresses under the weight of your body making your sneaker less comfortable and safe for your running outings. Imagine if you use this type of shoe for your cross-fit type workouts where you need to lift extra loads. Wear occurs very quickly!

For advice on the proper selection of a running shoe, we invite you to read the article by Daniel Riou, kinesiologist, How to choose your running shoes?

Multisport shoes

Are you more multisport, that is to say that you do not really have a connection to a particular sport, but practice it regularly? It may not be necessary to invest in several pairs of specialized sneakers, but rather for a pair of multisport shoes. Much stronger than a running shoe, the multisport shoe will allow you to run short distances without too much discomfort while allowing you to play tennis with better support than running shoes.

On the other hand, you have to be on your guard when it comes to buying multisport shoes in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. Indeed, unlike the market for running shoes which is very specialized and where the sellers are well trained, the market for multisport shoes is more oriented towards the aesthetics of the shoe. The selection criteria should strike a balance between lightness and stability.

Investments

Do you think that investing in adapted shoes will incur additional costs? Not quite. Indeed, a shoe that will be used only for an activity will wear out much less quickly since it has been designed to ensure comfort and durability on certain movements. Once at the end of its life, do not hurry to throw away your old pair of sneakers since it could be very useful in your daily activities such as walking the dog, mowing, etc.

  1. Well done Daniel !! Finally a sensible message that rises above this little “war” about minimalist shoes. These must be considered as running tools that everyone can and must choose according to their needs, abilities, interests, etc. The important thing, as you point out so well, is to understand the differences, to experiment, and to choose what is the most comfortable and what will lead us to go out and pass ourselves in running. Thank you also for making the link with specialized stores that offer good advice and keep a good enough inventory to find what is best for each of us. The only thing that disappoints me a little is that the link you give to find these specialty shops is that of the Runner's Clinic. This company (Clinique du coureur) always differentiates boutiques with what they consider to be better shops because they adhere to the minimalist philosophy of the Clinic.
